Account security
We had a series of account hacking and deleting during the past weeks caused by a leaked database of an instant 50 freeshard that went down a while ago. Unfortunately many of Uthgard's players who played on that server as well, used the same login data on both servers. We received the file and directly checked for matches in our database. Over 1000 accounts from that database existed with the same login name and password on Uthgard. Therefore we have changed the passwords of all accounts that were in danger of getting hijacked (or even deleted) as well to prevent any more damage. If you are affected by this action and you suddenly can't log in your account anymore, please use the account recovery form to get your account back.
If you play on other servers, please don't use the same login data!
Account recovery
Due to many accounts hacks caused by the leak of the account database of that server, we have received a huge wave of account recovery requests. Therefore currently we are not able to solve them in the regular time. Please stay patient, we are working on the tickets.
Old realmabilities
We are still working on the old realm abilities and have already finished a lot of them. However there is a lot of work to be done in order to complete them and the high temperatures and account security issues are hindering the completion. We will inform you when there are news.

Hello Uthgard!
Some time passed since we released our last news and as you eventually already have noticed, the main focus of our todays news are the upoming changes regarding the rvr-system. We want to thank every single player who intensively participated in the discussions on the rvr-system within the last weeks. Grab a coffee (or a tea), lean back and take some time, because these news are a little bit longer than usual.
General News
Staff We welcome Nidhoggur, Sethor and Trishin[ENG] to our Staff and we would like to thank Endiku for his quick assistance. Unfortunately Endiku had to leave again short after his return due to lack of time. The same goes for Ascarael who has left us before finishing his trial-phase. We thank you for your effort and wish you good luck. Thanks also go out to Therion, who left us before his trial-phase ended.
Account-Security and Email-Registration Further we want to talk about account-security and -responsibility. We have noticed an increase of lack of understanding when a shared account was banned. Please notice that any infringements caused by your account will be punished, no matter who's responsible for the happenings. So, it is in your own interest to avoid sharing your login information.
In addition we are now enforcing players to register a valid email-address for your game-account. It was a hard decision to introduce such an enforcement, but we simply had to take this step in order to prevent attempts of account phishing. Because there have been several misunderstandings on how to register an email-address we are offering a detailled tutorial on how to do so.

Housing The work on our MarketExplorer is almost finished. Currently we are testing the system and will implement it as soon as we have fixed the last flaws. Due to the fact that the MarketExplorer actually means the finalisation of our housing system we are going to adjust the prices for lots, houses and rental fees. The new pricings will be announced 2 weeks before they will be activated in order to give you the chance to adjust your houses if necessary.
Character deletions One question that is commonly asked is: "Are characters deleted on Uthgard?" The answer is: "Commonly, no." So far we have only deleted characters once. The reason for that deletion of characters in 2009 was a database-cleanup after 5-6years. The following rules were used in the deletion process
- Accounts containing characters below lvl10 that are not crafters and have not been logged in for more than 6 months - Accounts containing characters below lvl7 that are not crafters and have not been logge in for more than 3 months - Characters below lvl5 that have not been logged in for more than 1 year - Accounts not containing any character that have not been logged in for more than 90 days - Characters and Items without account
This is nothing new and was written down a few times. Nevertheless we want you to remind it.
RvR Revamp
After taking a closer look and analyzing the grievances and problems of our current RvR system, as well as reading the numerous forum topics describing these problems, we quickly noticed that an enduring improvement may only be achieved by addressing and working on the root of the problem which would obviously lead to a vast revamp of the whole system. In addition such a revamp should help finalizing the concept of a classic DAoC server that Uthgard strives to be. Due to the fact that these changes will have a deep impact and could potentially lead to imbalances if implemented seperately, we are going to release the system-wise (patch standart & RAsystem) changes at once.
New patch-limit 1.69 The topic of switching the patch standart has been hotly debated within the staff. However, after analyzing every single patchnote and our current server-progress, we decided to introduce 1.69 as new patch-limit. Currently we are working on a list containing all changes and are going to release it for public review within the next days. Please note that we are of course not going to revert obvious bugs.

After our last news we received emails from 117 players. Finally we have evaluated them and sorted them by categories, starting with the most mentioned topics. Here are your top 10 topics:

Classes
- Completing the classes (Cabalist, Necromancer, Bonedancer, Animist, Enchanter) This is indeed something that should have happened long time ago. We will focus on this now. (The order isn't fixed, but depends on the availability of certain developers.)
Realm abilities
- Missing statements regarding the realm abilities (new/old) As you can see, there are a lot of different opinions about this within the community. It's exactly the same in the staff. However we are all aware of the problems caused by this, for example players being unsure about what to do with their characters. We will discuss this again to find a final solution soon.
- Still some bugs in realm abilities (Ichor of the Deep, Static Tempest, Theurgist RR5, Reflex Attack, ...) Whether they get fixed or not depends on the decision of the ra system we're going to use in the future. It would be wasted time to spend hours fixing them now, if we'd switch to old realm abilities soon.
- Viper is too strong for the current setting - Charge (RA) is too strong for the current setting - Physical Defense is too strong for the current setting The power of these realm abilities is caused by the imbalance which we have in our current setting. The realm abilities we're having are from the new frontiers, a ToA era. On the other hand we do not have ToA stuff (like 3000hp tanks or overcap-attributes) that would normally be a counterbalance.
Setting
- Missing statements about the aimed patchlevel Unfortunately this topic is, like the ones before, dependent on the decision about the realm ability system. (As you can see now, this is not an easy issue since it has influence on many other topics. This is why we did not yet simply say A or B.)
- Casters are too weak compared to tanks in the current setting This is a really general statement. Casters do at least suffer from missing castspeed bonuses, but they do have the advantage of other realm abilities like Physical Defense. This is a topic that should be reviewed later on. In case we'd decide for the old realm abilities, this topic might be obsolete.
- Buffcharges and -potions should be removed It is indeed somehow paradoxical to forbid buffbots on the one hand and throwing stat-enhancing charges and potions into the game. We tried to find a solution for this, the tradeoff was to cut down the buff values. We might discuss this again.
- Casters suffered the most from the charge nerf That's true. We'll check this again.
- Instant teleporters between borderkeeps and capitol cities/housing should be re-implemented We'll discuss that again.
- The power (mana) pool is too small Needs to be tested.
- Nearsight is too strong Nearsight always had a duration of 2 minutes on live servers. During a late patch, new spells were introduced to cure the nearsight effect. We do not want a custom solution for this.
Calculations
- Archery damage too low - Twohand damage too low - Mob damage too low - Bladeturn gets penetrated too easy by highlevel mobs - Bolt damage too low - Different bleedings should stack - Blockchance calculation flawed All these issues have to be tested.
New implementations
- Classic dungeons We have been thinking about this. Although we are lacking reliable information about mob spawns and loot. If we have collected enough, it should not be a problem to grant access to these zones.
- Shrouded Isles Would be amazing, but currently there is too much left to do in the already existing regions. Late... |

We have noticed some of our players are unsatisfied with some issues. We want to show you that we care and want to know: What are the most annoying things to you? What do you extremely miss? Which bugs should be fixed immediately, which bugs should be fixed at last?
There will be a large amount of incoming emails. Please refrain from writing romans. Just give us some headwords instead. We will not reply to the mails. Instead we will evaluate their contents and sum up the results. They will be presentated here later on.

Please do not write wishes that do not fit into the current setting (patchlevel 1.80, no ToA+ content). We also will ignore any content about wishes for custom changes.

Hello Uthgard community. There are some news we would like to tell you.
Item Usage There was a bugfix to item usage via quickbar. You can't use items anymore by just clicking them on the quickbar or by just hitting the appropriate key. Like on live you need to press the USE key first (see /keyboard, default should be 'u'). Alternatively you can place the effect icon (the one you see in the bottom when rightclicking the item) in your quickbar and use it directly. Or just rightclick the item and type /use. Also, you cannot equip items from your backpack via quickbar anymore.
Evern Loot There was a small bugfix to Ethereal Drakescale Band and Luminescent Drakescale Band dropped by Evern in Old Frontiers. They are now rings, not bracers. If you still got the bracer version you can trade it in via /appeal.
Xmas Quest Tokens New NPCs joined the capitals to trade in your quest tokens from the winter market.
Darkness Falls Monsters Several mobs had their positions updated and/or fixed to be live like. A misplaced purple nightmare near the Midgard shredders was removed and players can now pass the area again, like before.
Account Hijacking
During the past weeks we had a few account hijacking attempts. Unfortunately some of them were successfull. Most of the accounts that were hijacked had the same login data on other freeshards. One of these freeshards seemed to have an unencrypted login database. Usually the passwords for all accounts are saved encrypted. This means if you enter a password like "pancake" it is saved as "fc5930a6007fef9b7d998f205417e671" in the database. Everytime you log in, the password you have entered is encrypted and checked whether it matches with the saved hash in the database. If encryption is deactivated in a server's database, the passwords are saved as plain text and can of course be read. Please do not use the same login data on other servers.
However we have reacted to the hijacking attempts in two ways: We have banned the hijackers and we have developed a safer system for password and email changes. As you may have noticed, you will no longer be able to change your password as long as there is no email address set for your account. As soon as an email address is set, it is not possible to change the email address or your password like it was before. If you want to change one of them, a confirmation email is sent to your email address. After you have confirmed your request, you can make these changes effective.
If you have lost your account due to the hijacking issue, please use our account recovery form. Please note that it is always way easier and safer to recover an account, if an email address is set. This is the only fast way of identifying you as the account owner. |

Password Security
If you have played on other freeshards with the same account/password combination you use on Uthgard, change your password right now! As you know, DOL is an open source project. Therefore, a malevolent freeshard admin could change the code and log your account name / password when you connect to his shard.
As we have seen quite a few account hijackings recently, we suspect this is the case, though we cannot identify any shard yet. If you have played on another DOL shard, if you might have used the same account/password combination, consider your account to be insecure.
For your information: We cannot restore any lost items, if your account was hijacked.
For your own security, change your password right now! Generally speaking, do not use the same account/password at different servers/sites. This means not only DOL shards, but also board logins, Ebay, Freemailers, anything.

Uthgard Xmas Event Like in the past year you can download the official Xmas Mod (DAoCPortal Patch) here (Official Download Section) or here (external Link) (md5: c121d58236e0f904fde3b39531635d2f).
There will be no Snowball Hunt this year, instead you will be able to do new quests there or visit the Christmas market. You can visit the Xmas Zone via channelers in the capitals or Mag Mell, Mularn and Cotswold from 25.12. till 26.12. (or may be even longer). Update: Zone will be accessible till 31th Dec (at least). Update: All Quests will give "tokens" as a reward. Keep them. You will be able to trade them for real rewards later (even in the new year).
Housing We noticed that housing is more and more used by the players and added many new housing lots in every zone. Additionally you can find a new NPC at each housing zone entrance that can tell you where free lots can be found.
Staff Changes We'd like to give a warm welcome to Eleras and Wally (again).
Ayjub, Endiku, Raik and Reiley have left the staff and we thank you for the great work you did on Uthgard.
Quests 245 Quests are currently implemented. And more to come soon every week. There will be a change for all Epic Quests, too. More on that later.
German Game Clients Climbing Walls (Klettern) should now work with German Game Clients, too.
1.99 Support 1.99 Game Client Support has just been activated.
Lagshadows & Clipping Range We did some fixes to Lagshadows and also increased the Clipping Range.

some more news for you:
Old Frontiers
So far, the introduction of Old Frontiers has been a huge success. More players than ever are in the RvR zones, fighting their realm enemies (or trying to level under the constant danger of being attacked). You have already found some bugs that we did'nt notice in internal testing. Some of them have been fixed, others will be shortly. Thank you for every report that helps us to improve OF and Uthgard.
edit: When repairing or upgrading keep doors, keep in mind that you need less wooden boards when you use better wood qualities. Here is a small table to show the relations:
Rowan - 1 wood units Elm - 4 wood units Oak - 8 wood units Ironwood - 16 wood units Heartwood - 32 wood units Runewood - 48 wood units Stonewood - 60 wood units Ebonwood - 80 wood units Dyrwood - 104 wood units Duskwood - 136 wood units
This means that 10 ironwood boards are for repairing/upgrading the same as 80 rowan boards. Higher wood qualities have a worse cost-benefit ratio (10 ironwood boards cost more than 80 rowan boards), but you won't have to run so often between the keep and the merchant.
General Conduct
In the last few weeks we noticed a growing number of complaints about players/groups "adding" other fights or "zerging". DAoC is a game in which three realms compete against each other. This may include duels between solo players or "8vs8" fights, but is not limited to them. 8vs1, 24vs8 or 50vs50 fights are viable too. If you like a certain playstyle (like for example, 8vs8) you may play according to that arbitrary ruleset, and others might be playing like that too. But you may NOT insult/flame other players in any community part just because they don't want to play with your arbitrary ruleset.
We are now taking a closer look into the broadcast chat of all realms and are aware of the different ban times allocated for "bad language in broad". The severity of the punishment (from friendly warning to permanent ban) depends on the severity of the actual bad language that was used.
Staff
We are looking for moderators for our forum and the official IRC channel. Duties include: Keeping those community parts clean and in line with our server/forum/irc rules, possibly translating News. If you have participated in our community for some time, do not flame yourself and think you have a certain talent to deal with other people, please write an application to Nayru. |
